A Look Inside: Texas Instruments TI-30xs Calculator

Ti-30XS Calculator
I wanted to see what was going on inside of my calculator. I decided to post some pictures and information about the inner-workings of the Ti-30XS.

Tools Needed:
-Phillips Screwdriver #0 Head
-Plastic Pry Tool

Teardown:
1. Remove the 6 Phillips Head Screws.

The Screws are highlighted orange

Remove the 6 screws from the calculator. They are highlighted orange in the image.

2.With the screws removed, gently pry open the calculator at the top with the plastic pry bar.

Pry at the highlighted opening

Insert the plastic pry bar at the yellow highlighted areas and gently peel the the calculator open.

3. With the back removed you can see the 3 main internal sections. The top power section, the main circuit board, and the keyboard circuit board.

4. Lets take a closer look at the battery and solar panel section. Note: This image is upside down.

The power section of the calculator.

Here you can see the coin cell battery in its holder and the corner of the solar cell. Also in the image is a picture of the ribbion cable that is attached to the lcd screen.

5. Now lets look at the main board. Note: This image is upside down.

The Ti-30xs Main Board

The Ti-30xs Main Board. There are 12 capacitors (11 SMD), 2 diodes, 1 led (I’m not sure why), 5 resistors, and 2 what appear to be transistors. The ribbon cables to the main board and lcd are visible.

6. We are good look at the final board now, the key-board circuit board.

Ti-30xs Keyboard Circuit Board

Its a pretty bare board just some traces and the ribbion cable that goes to the main board. This circuit board is held in place with melted plastic rivits and would take a good bit of effort to remove.

This is all the further I am going to take this calculator apart for two reasons. The plastic rivets on the key-board circuit board won’t allow for easy reassembly. Also the ribbion cables are very fragile and shouldn’t be moved, bent or adjusted too much.
